Obituary for Marina R. Voelker

Marina R. (nee Pauly) Voelker, loving wife, patient mother, caring grandmother, and thoughtful friend passed away on Friday, March 2, 2018. Marina, age 90, was a resident at Rhinelander Milestone Senior Living since June 2011.

The youngest of eight children, she was born to Anton and Mary (Lefeber) Pauly on June 27, 1927, in rural St. Cloud, Wisconsin.

On June 10, 1947, she married Alfred Voelker at St. Claudius Church in St. Cloud, WI. They would move to Fond du Lac and raise their five children in the house on the corner of 10th and Martin that she loved and lived in for the next 60 years. Her home, with a yard full of playground equipment, was a fun and inviting place for all the neighborhood children. When her children became teenagers, Marina continued to welcome their friends to her home with fresh popcorn and soda. But, she and Al also instilled the importance of working hard and a good education. She was proud that all her children graduated from college, an opportunity that she never had.

Marina was a busy mother, who also found time for simple pleasures. In addition to caring for her family, she worked at JC Penney for 19 years and volunteered at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. In her spare time, she could often be found in her backyard garden where she would gladly give flowers to anyone who asked. Marina also enjoyed baking cookies, watching Charlie Brown movies, and visits from her many nieces and nephews. Affectionately known as “M&M Grandma,” she would insist visitors treat themselves to the full candy dispenser in the living room.

Marina is survived by her five children, Sharon (Mike) Crumley of Orlando, FL, Sandy (Dave) Ebben of Rhinelander, Diane (Al Mento) Voelker of Nashua, NH, Brian (Sue) Voelker of Channassen, MN, and Therese (Robert) Hubacher of Rhinelander; nine grandchildren, Jim (Dana) Crumley, Kevin (Shelia Vanney) Crumley, Katie (Zack) Matlin, Rob Crumley, Emily Duss, Andrew (Katie) Voelker, Ellie (Ryan) Wickesberg, Selena Hubacher, and Raquel Hubacher; step grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Bernetta Pauly, Marian Voelker, and Marlene Voelker.

Marina now joins her husband, Alfred Michael Voelker, who died on March 13, 1985, and baby daughter, Janet Mary. She is also preceded in death by her parents: her sisters, Polly (Ernest) Sippel, Delia (William) Lauby, Antonia (Leo) Sippel, and Christina (Ben) Burg: her brothers, Michael (Ruth) Pauly, Ervin (Mildred) Pauly, and Sylvester Pauly; and brothers-in-law, Howard and Elroy Voelker.

Visitation for Marina will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Chapel of the Risen Christ in Calvary Cemetery at 686 Fond du Lac Avenue in Fond du Lac. Committal will follow at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Carlson Funeral Home of Rhinelander (715-369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) is assisting the family.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests support of a memorial to benefit local hospice programming and contributions may be directed in care of Marina’s family.
