Obituary for Shirley Rose Hale

Shirley Rose Hale, age 97 of Cambridge, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2017. She was born on March 14, 1920, in New Effington, South Dakota to Willard and Jessie (Wilson) Gilman.

Shirley was a toddler when the family moved to Rhinelander, Wisconsin; woman and children on the train, men by horse and wagon to bring furniture. Shirley was in the first grade when her mother and baby brother died during childbirth.

Shirley graduated from Rhinelander High School. She loved reading and basketball. In 1940, she married Henry Hedman and they had three children. They divorced in 1949. In 1953, she married Henry Hale. They separated in 1959 but remained friends, they did not divorce and Henry continued to be involved in the children’s lives.

Shirley held a variety of jobs in her early years then in about 1961 she was working at St. Mary’s Hospital and decided taking care of people was what she wanted to do. She moved to Milwaukee in 1963 and within a year was working at the V.A. hospital. She transferred to Minneapolis in 1968 and became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1972. She retired in 1978 due to degenerated discs in her back. She was very disappointed because she loved her job.

Her volunteer work included helping children learn to read, exercising a handicapped child, and later office work at a state hospital. She moved back to Rhinelander in the 1980s until about 2005 when she moved to Minnesota to live with her daughter. Her love of reading continued throughout her life and she also enjoyed crossword puzzles, tri chem painting, embroidery, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, flower and vegetable gardening, arranging picture albums, and solitaire on her computer.

Shirley was an inspiring, humble, kind, generous, and loving person with a hint of mischief. Shirley was preceded in death by her mother, Jessie; father, Willard Gilman; stepmother, Ruth; daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and William Guolee; brothers, baby boy, Gordon, Itha, Jim, and Darrel; and sisters, Inez Riley, Florence Belongia, and Lucy Skinner.

Shirley is survived by a son, David (Esther) Hedman; daughter, Edna Carlson, foster daughter, Carol (Doug) Deary; sisters, Darlene Brower and Karen (Jim) Statezney; brother, Dennis Miller; grandchildren, Lora (Darren) Collis, Dean Fredrick, Darrin Fredrick, and Doug Hedman; three step grandchildren Cindy Philips, Dawn Wanty, and David Guolee; eight great grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
