Obituary for Shirley M. Swearingen

Shirley M. Swearingen, age 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at Lake Shores Assisted Living in Lake Tomahawk. She was born on August 4, 1926, in Milwaukee, WI, the daughter of Herbert and Ellen Bergner.

Shirley was raised on Maple Street in Rhinelander where she attended West Side School and graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1944. She was active in her school years as a cheerleader, member of the Drama Club, and joined the V.F.W. Drum and Bugle Corps. After high school, she married Tom Webster of Harshaw and raised six children. Following Tom’s death in 1965, Shirley would marry Mark Swearingen in August of 1969 and they enjoyed nearly 40 years together.

Shirley was a faithful life time member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Rhinelander where she volunteered regularly with Sunday School, fund raisers, and sang in the church choir each Sunday. She belonged to the community vocal group, the Choraliers and was a member of the Rhinelander Women’s Club, the Democratic Party for Oneida County, and the local Antique Car Club. She was an avid seamstress, and loved daily walks and participating in activities with her grandchildren. Shirley’s love of life was truly exceptional.

Shirley is survived by five children, Lane (Karen) Webster of Waunakee, WI, Kerry Webster of Rhinelander, Carla Webster of Rhinelander, Paul (Rita) Webster of Rhinelander, and Brenda Truitt of Marco Island, FL; three step sons, Randy Swearingen of Mundelein, IL, Thomas (Beth) Swearingen of Rhinelander, and John Swearingen of Rhinelander; step daughter-in-law, Marge Johnson (formerly Swearingen); 17 grandchildren, David, Brian, Mitchell, Cynthia, Nikki, Natalie, Chris, Tim, Ken, Christine, Robert, Mary Jo, Teresa, Lauren, Michelle, Steven, and Erica; as well as 22 great grandchildren.


In addition to her first husband Tom, she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mark Swearingen on November 11, 2008; her daughter, Linda Kofron; step son, Richard “Dick” Swearingen; grandson, Theron Kofron; and son-in-law, Paul Truitt.

A memorial service for Shirley will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Anne Wahlers officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Northland Memorial Park. Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) is assisting the family with arrangements.
