Obituary for Ron D. Solsrud

Ron Solsrud, age 83 of Rhinelander, died on Thursday, February 1, 2018, at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born on August 8, 1934, in Milwaukee, WI to Iver and Erva (Winkler) Solsrud.

During the Korean War, Ron served with the 8th Division as an artillery surveyor in the U.S. Army. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville in 1960. Ron had a successful career as an engineer and moved into management, retiring as the General Manager for Amoco Transportation Services. During his career, he resided in Milwaukee, Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Chicago.

Ron married Dolores Stempniewski on May 31, 1958, and together they raised their family of five children. Ron, Dolores, and son, Kris moved to Rhinelander in 1990. Ron was a faithful member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod and served as chairman for four mission churches. During his years at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in Rhinelander, Ron served as treasurer and as chairman of Planning, Building, Outreach, and Youth committees.

In leisure time, Ron enjoyed time spent with his family, travel, wood cutting and carving, water sports, and downhill skiing.

Ron is survived by his wife, Dolores of Rhinelander; his five children, Joan (Chris) Rhein of Rockton, IL, Lynn (Chuck) Sutton of Elmhurst, IL, Ron (Wendy) Solsrud of Cedar Rapids, IA, Dave Solsrud of Oslo, Norway, and Kris Solsrud of Rhinelander; seven grandchildren, John and Amanda (Ethan Pedretti) Lawrence, Emily and Andrew Solsrud, Charlie and Samantha Sutton and Laura (Andy) Gelsinger; great granddaughter, Natalie; sister, Carol Nitz of Fond du Lac, WI and brother, Gerald Solsrud of Oconomowoc, WI. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service for Ron will be held at 12 p.m. noon on Thursday, February 8, 2018, at the Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) with Rev. Richard Krahn officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Northland Memorial Park. A memorial in Ron’s name has been established for the benefit of the Serving Zion Endowment Fund and contributions may be directed in care of his family.
