Obituary for Grant J Cummings

Grant Julien Cummings, age 89 of Rhinelander, died peacefully at home on January 29, 2018 under the care of Ascension Hospice. He was born on July 2, 1928 to John and LaJune(Julien) Cummings in Milwaukee, WI.

Grant grew up in the Chicago area and was quite adept at sports. He played minor league baseball for the Chicago Cubs for a brief time before continuing his education. He earned a teaching degree from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree from Northwestern University. While at NIU, he played baseball and his team won the conference championship in 1950. His team has since been inducted into the NIU Hall of Fame. Grant coached baseball and football while teaching in LaGrange, Illinois.

He married Patricia Lamphere in Elgin, Illinois in 1951 and they had three children, Cathy, Brad and Mike. They spent many summers vacationing in the Northwoods and moved the family to Rhinelander in 1969 when Grant took a teaching position with Nicolet College, where he worked until retirement. He worked many summer jobs throughout his teaching career and was an avid golfer. He and Pat enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and attended many of their sporting events. Grant and Pat shared 49 years of marriage before Pat passed away in 2001.

Grant frequently told others that he was lucky twice in his life. He married Jeanette(Kamrath)Moore in 2002 and they were given over 15 years together. With Jeanette at his side, Grant enjoyed golf, hiking, playing cards, wintering in Arizona and visiting his and her children and grandchildren. Grant was one to always offer help, especially with building projects.

Grant leaves behind many loved ones and friends. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, his three children, Cathy(Tom) Knudsen of Rhinelander, Brad(Mary Lou) of Powell, Wyoming, and Mike(Lori) of Rhinelander, his stepdaughter Sandy(Blair) Jackson of Souix Falls, South Dakota, and stepson David(Sharon) Moore of Flagstaff, Arizona. His grandchildren are, Amy(Josh) Schmitz, Kristy(Jeremy) McCone, Jason(Katy) Knudsen, Morgan(Trena) Quick, Gregory(Shannon) Cummings, Daniel(Jessie) Cummings, Nathan Cummings, William(Molly) Cummings, Paul Cummings, Jared(Zoe) Cummings, Jessie(Joe) Belter, step-grandchildren Seth Jackson, Aaron(Vanessa) Moore, and Ethan and Kevin Moore, His great grandchildren include Holden and Henry Schmitz, Parker and William McCone, Addisyn, Bridget, Lauren, Xavier, Genevieve, and Felicity Cummings, James, Lewis, and Max Cummings, Ryan Cummings, Lily and Aurie Cummings, Rowan and Hudson Belter, and Oliver Moore.

Grant was preceded in death by his first wife Pat, and his sister Jane Anderson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, with a visitation from 9;00 AM to 11:00 AM on March 24th, 2018 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Reverend's Timothy and Kari Vadis will officiate.You may leave your private condolences for the Cummings family at www.carlsonfh.com.
