Obituary for Arlene K. Marten

Arlene Marten, age 88 of Rhinelander, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at her home. She was born on October 10, 1929, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Carl and Anna (Langseth) Melby.

Arlene attended school in Eau Claire, graduating from high school in 1948. She worked for Benson Optical in Eau Claire and was an elevator operator in the Scandinavian American Fraternity Building also in Eau Claire. Arlene married James “Jim” A. Marten on December 26, 1951. Arlene and Jim lived in Lake Charles, LA where Jim was serving in the Air Force. They moved to Rhinelander in 1954.

In addition to caring for her family, Arlene was very involved in the Boy Scout program with Pack and Troop 572. Her four sons and two grandsons earned the rank of Eagle Scout and daughter, Jackie was awarded the Eagle Feather and Wood Badge through the Scouting program. Arlene was fondly known as “Ma” and “Grandma” to many of the scouts she mentored. She was also a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.

Arlene is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline (William) Giede of Wausau; four sons, James (Sandy) Marten Jr. of Granbury, TX, Michael (Barbara) Marten of Rhinelander, Gerald Marten of Rhinelander, and Ronald (Angie) Marten of Tuttle, OK; 13 grandchildren, Kathryn, James, Jason, Jeremy, Jessica, Sarah, Addam, Vincent, Levi, Sasha, Jasmyn, Colton, and Ashly; 16 great grandchildren; in-laws, Margie Melby, Patricia (Russell) Bellile, Mareta Marten, and Ervin (Martha) Marten; as well as nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. Arlene was also blessed with what she affectionately called her second family, Lorene Soppeland and her three sons, Lavern (Marion), David (Marlene), and Wayne (Jan).

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim on May 20, 1990, a son, David; and her brother, Laurence Melby.

The funeral service for Arlene will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2018, at St. Mark Lutheran Church with Rev. Richard Miller officiating. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. Interment will follow in Forest Home Cemetery.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial will be established in Arlene’s name and contributions may be directed in care of her family.
