Dorothy M. Seabloom, age 89 of Rhinelander, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Ministry St. Mary's Hospital. Tom Brokaw never met Dorothy Seabloom, but he talked about her often when he spoke about "The Greatest Generation." A child of the Great Depression, a young woman who worked in a factory helping make airplanes during World War II, and a lady long on work ethic and tough of spirit who helped make America what it is today. That was Dorothy Seabloom. Born on August 18, 1922, in Rhinelander, Wisconsin to John Anderson and Selma Soderman Anderson, she dedicated her life to others. Whether serving her country, raising a family, or helping people enjoy a better life through their vacation time at the lake, Dorothy's life's work and legacy revolved around doing things for other people. A 1940 graduate of Rhinelander High School, Dorothy married Arthur Seabloom in 1942. While he served in the Air Force (and later became a POW in the European Theater), she worked in Minnesota making rings for airplane fuselages in support of the war effort. After the war, she and Art gave hundreds of families the gift of the The Great Northwoods as they ran the Limberlost Resort on the Moens Chain of lakes. Art began working in the paper industry as well, a career that eventually pulled them away from Rhinelander, first to Longview, WA, then to Veradero, Cuba, and then to Augusta, GA. Their home was always Rhinelander, though, and they returned home and began operating Oaken Bucket Cottages on Thunder Lake. Still operated by their three children, the resort hosted numerous visitors and a multitude of guests became friends with Dorothy over the years. Dorothy enjoyed traveling the country with Art to visit family and she was an active member of the gray ladies for several years. She delivered Meals on Wheels and was an active member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church. Dorothy is survived by her three children, Allan (Theresa) Seabloom of Rhinelander, Sharon Seabloom Huebsch (Norbert) of Northport, FL, and Jeffrey (Lynn) Seabloom of Rinelander; six grandchildren, Sarah (Nels) Rodefeld of Maud, OK, Reese Huebsch of New York, NY, Brittany Seabloom of West Hollywood, CA, Hillary Seabloom of Tustin, CA, Tyler Seabloom of Green Bay, WI, and Alex Seabloom of Madison, WI; and three sisters, Lorraine Wolff, Linette Musson, and Janice Voight. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur on April 26, 2004; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Seabloom; and three sisters, Violet Anderson, Margaret Musson, and Sandra Arms. You could always count on her to say what she thought, not what you wanted to hear. But no matter what she said, it always came from the heart and was intended to help. Sacrifice, sturdiness of spirit, and the willingness to help others are what we will remember about Dorothy. The family asks that if you wish to honor her memory, you tell someone you love them and help someone in need of a hand. A funeral service for Dorothy will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2012, at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church with Rev. Norman Peterson officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
