|Wayne J. Fish passed peacefully in his sleep early Monday morning, February 14th at the age of 62. Wayne was diagnosed with brain cancer on December 27, 2010. Wayne passed in the comfort of his own home in Rhinelander, Wisconsin alongside his wife - Barb and only child - Bryan. Wayne was born on March 28, 1948 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin the eldest of six to Bernard and Ruth Fish. Wayne is survived by his mother Ruth(Wierske)Fish; sisters Bev(Fish)Eckert and Judy(Fish)Clark; brothers Larry, Steve and Mike; nieces Lynn Theroux, Amy Dunham, Lisa Michalowski, Stefanie Fish, Sarah Clark, Marissa Fish, McKenzie Fish; nephews - Bruce Ashbaugh, Daryl Ashbaugh, Jason Fish and Mike Eckert. Wayne and Barb were married on July 31, 1971 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin after both graduating from UW-Stout. Wayne and Barb immediately moved to Rhinelander, Wisconsin where Wayne began his teaching career as the newly-formed Technological Education instructor at James Williams Junior High School - a position that he held for 32.5 years before retiring on January 23, 2004 at the age of 55.
Wayne was well known as an outdoor recreation enthusiast, particularly in the sports of cross country skiing, mountain biking, kayaking and running. He was instrumental in developing and maintaining ski trails in the 1980's and mountain bike trails in the late 1990's until the present both at Camp Tesomas. He was also instrumental in the creation and maintenance of ski and mountain bike competitions on these trails. Wayne was motivated to pass on his passion for these activities, particularly to youth. He supported the Rhinelander High School and Middle School cross country ski programs for the early 1980's until his passing.
Wayne's life will be celebrated this Friday evening and Saturday morning in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 18, 2011 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 6:45 PM at the Carlson Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Nativity of Our Lord Parish-St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father John Gerritts officiating. There will also be an hour of visitation just prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
