Donald Lee Roberts, age 94 of Rhinelander, died Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at his home. He was born on March 14, 1916, in Richland Center, Wisconsin to James and Mary (Beighley) Roberts. Don worked as a logger for much of his life starting out in the old logging camps at an early age. He then worked for Tomahawk Kraft Lumber Company in Ely, MN during WW II. He returned to the area and logged on the Willow Flowage for twenty-years before joining the Oneida County Highway Department where he served as the lead man on the rock crusher for 15 years until his retirement. Don married the former Helen Fox on February 17, 1940, in Tomahawk. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Rhinelander. Don was a great hunter and trapper and loved to fish for trout. He had been an amateur wrestler and was once asked to go to Detroit to try out for professional wrestling but home circumstances kept him in Tomahawk. He was known as a great story teller. Don is survived by his three daughters, Ura-Dell Sellhorn of Chesterton, IN, Gloria (James) Sellhorn of Valparaiso, IN, and Theresa Roberts of Superior, WI; four sons, Dennis (Patricia) Roberts of Harshaw, Donald (Mary Ann) Roberts of Rhinelander, Sherman (Lindy) Roberts of Rhinelander, and Keith (Elizabeth) Roberts of Big Lake, MN; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; one sister, Phyllis Dahl of Tomahawk; two brothers, Clinton (Jeanie) Roberts of Menasha, WI and Lyle (Ceil) Roberts of Tomahawk; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen on February 26, 2006, infant twin sons, six sisters, and four brothers. Funeral services for Don will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 13, 2010, at the Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) with Chaplain John Uhlarik officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 12, 2010, at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday. Interment will be in the Union Grove Cemetery in the Town of Cassian. Don's family would like to acknowledge and thank our special friend, neighbor, and caregiver, Leah Robbins for all that she did to help dad be comfortable in his last days.
