Charles "Chuck" Fitzgerald, age 58 of Rhinelander, died Monday, February 15, 2010, at his home. He was born on November 19, 1951, in Madison, Wisconsin to Claire and Mary (Hammond) Fitzgerald. Chuck graduated from Madison West High School in 1969. He attended the UW-Eau Claire; earning a Bachelor's degree in Environmental and Public Health, and later earned his Master's degree in Soil Science from the UW-Madison. He married the former Gail Hoeppner on July 13, 1974, in Wausau. They resided in Madison where Chuck was employed by the Wisconsin Dept. of Public Health. After receiving his Master's degree, Chuck moved to Rhinelander in 1980 where he was employed as a Water Supply Specialist with the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources until his retirement. He was involved with the Wisconsin Water Well Association and was a member of the Rhinelander School Board since 1999. As a member of the board, Chuck served as Treasurer and President and was elected to the Wisconsin Association of School Boards to represent Northern Wisconsin. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including hiking with his dogs, fishing, kayaking, and skiing. Chuck will be fondly remembered as a man who truly loved life to its fullest and shared a deep appreciation for the Northwoods he called home. Chuck is survived by his wife, Gail Fitzgerald of Rhinelander; his two daughters, Megan Fitzgerald of Chicago, IL and Cara Fitzgerald of Madison; two brothers, John (Mary) Fitzgerald of Hauppauge, NY and Dennis (Nancy) Fitzgerald of Coarsegold, CA; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claire and Mary Fitzgerald. At Chuck's request, there will be no formal funeral services. A memorial will be established in his name for the benefit of a scholarship fund for Rhinelander District students and contributions may be directed in care of his family.
