Winifred "Winny" Maloney, age 81, of Rhinelander, died on November 29, 2009 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI. Winny was born on April 15, 1928 in Black River Falls, WI to Arthur and Ella (Torgerson)Holmgreen. She was baptized and confirmed at the Squaw Creek Lutheran Church. She graduated from Black River Falls High School in 1946. Winny embraced her pledge of "till death do us part" made on August 17th 1946, when she married Elten Maloney at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rhinelander. They were seperated but once-by eleven days- when he preceded her in death on November 18th of this year. She clung firm to the faith of her youth, and ensured her children also learned of the saving grace of Christ through their Christian education at Zion Lutheran School. She was a proud member of the church and served with both the Ladies Aid and Guild. Winny was a woman of many passions and talents. She relished the hunt for antiques and bargains at garage sales. She was proud of her home, and experienced joy in decorating it with an array of different styles, including accents of the desert Southwest-an area of the country of which she was particularly fond. She had a keen appreciation of nature, enjoying gardening, and landscaping during the warm months, while greeting her beloved chickadees and cardinals at the variety of feeders she kept well-stocked through the depths of winter. Among her entire family (and the fortunate friends who were recipients of her handiwork) she was renowned for her exceptional skills in the kitchen, where her fresh breads, cinnamon rolls, pies, cookies, and her masterpiece-Parker House Rolls- were met by eager hands, and happy bellies. She was a champion of the poor and less fortunate; those with physical or mental disabilities were particulary blessed by her caring and compassionate nature. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her daughter Maxine, parents, two brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn(Peter)Schoeneck of Rhinelander, her two sons Mitchell(Jeanne)Maloney of West Band, WI and Mark(Betsy)Maloney of Madison, WI, her sister Avis(Al)Ruhnke of Fon du Lac, WI, seven grandchildren Drew(Katharine) and Sam Schoeneck, Sarah(Zach)Lamp, Katie, Laura, Ella and Gracia Maloney and four great grandchildren Colin, Eli, Owen and Jonah. Visitation for Winny will be held on Friday, December 4, 2009 from 9:00 AM until the time of funeral services at 10:30 AM all at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Reverend David Sternberg will officiate. Interment will be in the Forest Home Cemetery.
