Elten A Maloney, age 86, of Rhinelander, died on November 18, 2009, at the King Veterans Home. Elten was born in Rhinelander on January 1, 1923, to Leo and Frieda(Jeswein)Maloney. He attended Zion Lutheran Grade School and graduated from the Rhinelander High School in 1940. He then graduated from the Lab School at the Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, CO. Elten served in the US Army during WW II and after his honorable discharge, he returned to Rhinelander where he was a longtime employee of the Rhinelander Paper Company, retiring in 1984. He was a lifelong resident of Rhinelander and more importantly he was also a lifelong member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served in many capacities with the church over the years which included the church council, counting teams, ushering, Board of Parish Education and others. He was an avid reader until his eyesight failed him. He loved sports; especially watching the Packers, Brewers and Badgers. He married Winifred "Winny" Holmgreen on August 17, 1946 in Rhinelander and she survives him. Elten is also survived by his daughter Marilyn(Peter)Schoeneck of Rhinelander, his two sons Mitchell(Jeanne)Maloney of West Bend, WI and Mark(Betsy)Maloney of Madison, WI, his seven grandchildren Drew and Sam Schoeneck, Sarah(Zach)Lamp, and Katie, Laura, Ella and Gracia Maloney, and his four great grandchildren Colin, Eli, Owen and Jonah. Elten was preceded in death by his daughter Maxine (Marilyn's twin sister) and a half brother Bernard Rathbun. Memorial services for Elten will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, November 23, 2009 at the Zion Eavangelical Lutheran Church with the Reverend David Sternberg officiating. Visitation will from 9:00 AM until just prior to the services on Monday at the church. Interment will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial is being established in Elten's name and can be directed to his family. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414/www.carlsonfh.com) is handling the arrangements for the Maloney family.
