Neil F. Holquist, age 67 of Rhinelander, died Saturday, September 12, 2009, after a long battle with cancer, at his home under the care of his family. He was born on November 15, 1941, in Rhinelander to George and Florence (Smith) Holquist. Neil graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1960 and then served in the U.S. Army until 1964. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Rhinelander where he married the former Joy Hasselquist on March 23, 1968. Neil was employed at the Rhinelander Paper Company for 33 years until retiring in 1998. Neil was an avid outdoorsman; enjoying bow and rifle hunting with his sons on his Pine Lake forty, cutting firewood, and ice fishing for crappies. He was a member of Zion Ev. Lutheran Church. Neil is survived by his wife, Joy of Rhinelander; his three sons, Jim (Cheri) Holquist, Mark (Gayle) Holquist, and Brian Holquist all of Rhinelander; two grandsons, Kyle and Dylan; step grandchildren, Nikki, B.J., Aimee, and Michael; a sister, Tammy Pedriana of Waukesha, WI; and two brothers, Doug (Janet) Holquist of Rhinelander and Robert (Barb) Holquist of Cullowhee, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Neil will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church with Rev. David Sternberg officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Carlson Funeral Home (369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
