William "Bill" Hitter, age 77 of Rhinelander, died Friday, September 11, 2009, at his home. He was born on September 4, 1932, in Argonne, Wisconsin to Harry and Margaret (Hill) Hitter. Bill graduated from Crandon High School and continued his education at the UW-Madison. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Wisconsin where he married the former Carol Clapper on June 13, 1959, in Bundy. Bill was employed for 30 plus years as an agent for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad until his retirement. Bill was an active outdoorsman; enjoying hunting, fishing, running, and gardening. He also counted shooting pool and crosswords among his hobbies. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and a volunteer at the Oneida Senior Center. Bill is survived by his three children, Bryan Hitter of Rhinelander, Jane (John) Coenen of Hortonville, WI, and Tom Hitter of Rhinelander; three granddaughters, Danielle Hitter and Sydney and Elaina Coenen; two sisters, Norma Surin of Kimberly, WI and Gayanne Wickman of Weyauwega, WI; and a special friend, Mary Huber. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol on September 26, 1999; a sister, Lorrene; and a brother, Harry. Memorial services for Bill will be held at 12 p.m. (noon) on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, at the Carlson Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Shearier officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
