Robert "Bob" Evans, age 87 of Rhinelander, died Friday, August 28, 2009, at his home. He was born on January 9, 1922, in Los Angeles, CA to James and Anita Evans. Bob honorably served in the U.S. Army during WW II. Following service, he returned to Milwaukee, WI where he married the former Dorothy Evenson. Bob was employed in Milwaukee at Harnischfeger Industries, United Shoe Machinery, and then at Banner Welder until his retirement in 1983. Bob's true passion was sports. He participated as a player, coach, manager, referee, and spectator. His true love was the Milwaukee Brewers but the Chicago Cubs held a special place in his heart from his childhood days. He moved to Rhinelander in 1983 following his retirement. For years, he was a daily regular for coffee and dinner at the Rhinelander Country Kitchen. In the course of these visits, he developed special friendships with both fellow customers and staff and he considered many of these friends as extended family. Family was everything to Bob and he was proud of all their accomplishments. Daily visits from family were the highlight of his days and were a special joy to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who came to support him; especially in these later years. Bob is survived by his children, Vicki (Jimi) Richter of Rhinelander, Kelly (Michael) Barnett of Dodgeville, WI, and David (Barb) Evans of Florida; step children, John Zinda of Rhinelander, Janice (Mike) Roberts of Milwaukee, and Rick (Rachel) Zinda of Iowa; 20 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and a sister, Beverly Campbell of Germantown, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step father, Leonard "Pappy" Stromberg, who Bob regarded as his own father; and his former wife, Dorothy. In honor of Bob's love of sports, his family will be attending the Milwaukee Brewers game on September 6, 2009. All are invited to remember Bob by watching the game or by just taking a moment on Sunday to recall the life he shared. Carlson Funeral Home (369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) is assisting Bob's family with arrangements. |
