Mercedes Sebestyen, age 89 of Rhinelander, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on April 30, 1920, in Milwaukee to Robert and Louise (Maegli) Nolte. Mercedes graduated from Whitefish Bay High School. She married Steve Sebestyen on August 11, 1943, in Wood, WI and they resided in Greendale in the Milwaukee area. In addition to raising her family, she was employed as a guidance secretary at Greendale High School until her reitrement. She moved to Delevan in 2004 and then to Rhinelander in 2006. Mercedes was involved in many church activities at Southside Church of Christ in Milwaukee, Elkhorn Church of Christ in Elkhorn, and then the Rhinelander Church of Christ / Hope Center in Rhinelander. She was also an active resident at Grace Lodge in Rhinelander. Mercedes is survived by her son, James (Kathie) Sebestyen of Lake Tomahawk; her daughter, Margie (Tom) Roerkohl of LaCrosse; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a tenth great granddaughter due to arrive in December. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Steve on September 18, 2006; a son, Jon; and a granddaughter, Michelle. Funeral services for Mercedes will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009, at Grace Foursquare Church in Rhinelander with Gary Schloemer officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church. Interment will be in Minocqua Memorial Cemetery.
