Norman John Bergman, Sr., age 94, of Rhinelander, died on July 11, 2009 at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. He was born on March 11, 1915 in Summit Township, in Langlade County, the son of Fredriech and Anna(Gnahn)Bergman. After his schooling Norman worked on the family farm and homestead and at various logging camps and sawmills. He was called in the first "Peace Time" draft in January of 1941 and then served with the US Army's 7th Division. He served in the Pacific Theatre, trained under General Patton and participated in four major battles. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to the US and married Esther Neimuth in 1945. Norman was employed by the Rhinelander Paper Company for many years retiring in 1977. He enjoyed traveling and working in his well known rasberry patch. He was a longtime member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the VFW Ray Rousseau Post #3143. Norman also volunteered as a driver for the VA escort service and meals on wheels, and was well known at the Oneida County Senior Center. He is survived by his wife Esther of Rhinelander, his two daughters Diane(James)Goslin and Pamela(Robert)Gauthier of Rhinelander, his two sons Norman John(Barbara) of Rhinelander and Mitchell(Sharon) of Harshaw, twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, his brother LaVerne(Virginia)Bergman of Gleason and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daugher Ramona and her husband Dennis Esselstrom, a granddaughter Victoria Bergman and two sisters Evelyn Oestrich and Dorothy Lee. Funeral services for Norman will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Carlson Funeral Home with the Reverend David Sternberg officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 AM on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Carlson Funeral Home. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414/www.carlsonfh.com) is handling the arrangements for the Bergman family.
