Clarence "Red" Marquardt, age 91, of the Town of Stella, died on March 15, 2009 at his home. Clarence was born in Emmet, (Marathon County) Wisconsin on January 29, 1918 to Emil and Anna(Kleversahl)Marquardt. His family moved to Rhinelander where Red, nicknamed for his brilliant red hair, attended schools. He graduated from the Rhinelander High School in 1936 and was very involved in athletics having played football, basketball and Shorty Baseball. Red quarterbacked Rhinelander to victory over Antigo in the first bell game in 1935 and was named captain and all conference in his senior year. Red then was employed by the Rhinelander Paper Company for many years retiring in 1976. During this time he also served with the US Navy during WW II and had also worked parttime with John Palm Electric to help support his large family. As the older children started leaving home Red and his wife relocated to the cottage they built on Stella Lake. It was there that they also operated Red Marquardt's Sawmill. In 2008 the 100 year old sawmill was relocated to the Logging Museum in Pioneer Park and thanks to many hours from family and friends, it will be open to the public this coming summer. Red was a longtime member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. In his younger years Red had served as the Manager of the Rhinelander Shorty Baseball Team and he enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. Red is survived by his wife Mae, his four daughters Barbara(Dennis)Johnson, Linda Thorsen, Cindy Cahak and Karen(Jim)Krupa, his five sons Roger(Cindy)Marquardt, Philip(Lynette)Marquardt, Douglas(Pat)Marquardt, David(Peggy)Marquardt and Steve(Cindy)Marquardt, 28 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson Richie Marquardt and five siblings, Tony, Lillian, Dora, Florence and Lester. A memorial is being established in Red's name and can be directed to his family. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the Carlson Funeral Home and from 10-11 AM on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Reverend Peter Korthals officiating.
