Frances Julia Schaefer (nee Zlabis), age 91, of Rhinelander, passed away at her home on Sunday, November 2, 2008. She was born in McNaughton on April 7, 1917, the oldest child of William and Mary (Malsavage) Zlabis. Frances later moved to Milwaukee, where she met Herbert Joseph Schaefer. Herbert and Frances were married on June 25, 1938, in Milwaukee. Throughout their lives together, Herbert, Frances, and their children vacationed in Rhinelander at their cottage. Once Herbert retired, they moved permanently to Rhinelander after building their retirement home. Frances loved to fish and go rummaging. She also enjoyed reading Agatha Christie books in her earlier years and watching old-time movies in her later years. "Granny Franny" will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Frances is survived by her six children, Wayne (Jean) Schaefer of Mukwanago, William (Lisa) Schaefer of Rhinelander, Sandy (Chuck) Gibson of New Berlin, Mary (Dan) Hanlon of Simpsonville, KY, Mia (George Nowack) Kauffman of Rhinelander, and Diana (John Siefert) Schaefer of Rhinelander; her grandchildren, Molly, Jill, Joe, Bob, Jenny, Carrie, Willis, Andy, Amber, Ashley, Chris, and Joshua; her sister, Suzanne (Louis) Peters of New Berlin; her great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert; two sisters, Ruth Daniels and Louise Birgel; and her brothers-in-law, Roy Schaefer and Dan Daniels.
